Barium nitrate is also called Barium(II) nitrate (1:2) with chemical formula Ba(NO3)2. With the CAS registry number 10022-31-8, it has EINECS registry number of 233-020-5. It is stable and incompatible with combustible material, reducing agents, acids and acid anhydrides. This chemical is a strong oxidizer which contacts with combustible material may lead to fire. Barium nitrate is moisture sensitive which is a white crystals. The substance is hygroscopic and soluble in water, slight soluble in alchol and acetone, almost insoluble in concentrated acid. Hydrochloric acid and hydrogen nitrate can reduce its solubility in water.
Properties: Barium nitrate, when mixed with many other metals like zinc or aluminium, or combined with alloys such as aluminium-magnesium, ignites and explodes on impact. It is an oxidizer which reacts vigorously with common reducing agents. Barium nitrate will decompose to barium oxide, nitrogen dioxide and oxygen at elevated temperatures.
2 Ba(NO3)2 + heat → 2 BaO + 4 NO2 + O2
Owing to the formation of alkyl nitrates, the mixture of Barium nitrate with alkyl esters may explode. In addition, Barium nitrate will react explosively with phosphorus, tin(II) chloride, or other reducing agents.
Preparation: Barium nitrate can be manufactured in several methods. You can use hydrogen nitrate - barium carbonate: dissolving barium carbonate in nitric acid, allowing any iron impurities to precipitate, then filtered, evaporated, and crystallized. Finally, you can gain the end product.
BaCO3 + 2 HNO3 → Ba(NO3)2 + H2O + CO2↑
In addition, barium chloride is combined with a heated solution of sodium nitrate, causing barium nitrate crystals to separate from the mixture.
BaCl2 + NaNO3 → Ba(NO3)2 + NaNO3
Besides, barium chloride reacts with hydrogen nitrate in acidproof stoneware and then is cooled down to 25 °C. The precipitate of Barium nitrate will generate, and is eluted with distilled water.

When you are using Barium nitrate, you should be very cautious about it. This chemical is oxidising and harmful by inhalation and if swallowed. Contact with combustible material may cause fire. You must keep it away from combustible material. After contact with skin, you need wash immediately with plenty of soap-suds.
Uses: Barium nitrate is mixed with thermite to form Thermate-TH3, used in military thermite grenades. In addition, this chemical is used in the manufacture of optical glass, barium oxide, the vacuum tube industry and for green fire in pyrotechnics. It can also be used in other aspects such as antiseptic, chemical reagent and medicine. Besides, Barium nitrate is also used as analytical reagent and oxidant.
