The IUPAC name of Acid Yellow 23 is trisodium 5-oxo-1-(4-sulfonatophenyl)-4-[(4-sulfonatophenyl)diazenyl]-4H-pyrazole-3-carboxylate. With the CAS registry number 1934-21-0, it is also named as 1H-Pyrazole-3-carboxylic acid, 4,5-dihydro-5-oxo-1-(4-sulfophenyl)-4-((4-sulfophenyl)azo)-, trisodium salt; Tartrazine. Preparation of Acid Yellow 23: It can be obtained by the condensation of two-hydroxy-tartaric acid and phenylhydrazine-p-sulfonic acid. Or coupling 1-(4'-sulfophenyl)-3-carboxy-5-pyrazolidone and sulfanilic acid which is diazotization, then salting with sodium chloride. Finally, we can get the product by purification.
